About the conference

The Faroe Islands will host a conference focused on the potential of marine and coastal tourism in the North Atlantic region. Despite the ocean’s central role in the region — geographically, economically, and culturally — current tourism products and activities remain limited and are often centered around fishing or traditional sightseeing experiences.

As part of its 2025 NORA chairship, the Faroe Islands have chosen this conference as one of their main projects to explore how tourism providers and stakeholders across the region can further develop and expand innovative and regenerative marine and coastal tourism experiences.

The event will take place on 21–22 October 2025, at Hotel Føroyar in Tórshavn. The keynote speaker is Cillian Murphy from Ireland. Cillian has led the award-winning tourism development on the Loop Head Peninsula, with a strong focus on responsible travel and active involvement of the local community. He brings extensive experience in community-based tourism, destination development, and tourism policy.

The conference will feature several valuable keynotes in the field, followed by sessions focusing on good practices and experience-sharing from across NORA and the wider Nordic region.

The Nordic region aims to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. Achieving this vision requires collaboration across borders. A key outcome of the conference will therefore be to establish a shared approach among North Atlantic stakeholders for advancing innovative and regenerative marine and coastal tourism — creating long-term value for communities while leaving a lighter footprint on the environment.
