FabLab Summer School

The purpose of the FabLab Summer School was to bring together Nordic students enrolled in vocational and educational training (VET) and give them an opportunity to learn about new technology and learn new skills, as well as to introduce them to working with people from other Nordic countries. The maker movement provides an excellent opportunity to encourage people from different countries to work together and collaborate.

During the summer of 2017, NORA invited VET students from the whole NORA area (coastal Norway, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland) to participate in a fabrication-laboratory (FabLab) summer-school programme in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.

FabLab Summer School participants learned about digital fabrication techniques. During the course, they were introduced to 2D and 3D design software and learned to use CNC milling machines, a vinyl cutter, a laser cutter and 3D printers. They also programmed some electronics.

The impact of NORA’s FabLab summer schools has been as much social as it has been educational. Students learned about each other, worked together on interesting projects and have since kept in touch and continued learning about each other’s countries and ways of living and learning.
